ACH Standard Entry Class code

CCD SEC code: Corporate Credit or Debit Entry

Credit or debit between business accounts.

What CCD is for

  • Business-to-business payments: paying suppliers, collecting from business customers, moving cash between a company’s own accounts (cash concentration and disbursement).
  • One optional addenda record (type 05) carries up to 80 characters of payment information — an invoice number, for example. With that addenda it is often called CCD+.

Business (non-consumer) accounts on both sides.

Authorization

An agreement between the Originator and the business Receiver (a trading partner agreement) that binds the Receiver to the Rules. The Rules don’t prescribe its form the way they do for consumer debits.

A summary in general terms: the Nacha Operating Rules set the exact requirements, and Regulation E adds its own for consumer accounts.

Debits, credits and addenda

Debits and credits.

Addenda on a forward entry: type 05, up to 1 per entry. Returns (addenda type 99) and Notifications of Change (type 98) follow their own layouts whatever the SEC code.

Returns

A business has no 60-day window for unauthorized debits: it returns them with R29 within 2 banking days, and later only with the ODFI’s agreement (R31). A CCD debit that reaches a consumer account without the consumer’s authorization can be returned as R05 within 60 days.

Common mix-ups

  • PPD or CCD? The Receiver’s account decides, not the Originator: a company paying an employee’s personal account uses PPD; paying another company’s account, CCD.
  • CCD or CTX? CCD carries at most one addenda record; CTX carries up to 9,999 in an EDI format, for remittances covering many invoices.

Where CCD sits in a NACHA file

The SEC code is a batch-level field: positions 51–53 of the Company/Batch Header record (type 5), so every entry in the batch shares it, and a file that mixes SEC codes puts them in separate batches. The batch header also carries the Company Name, Company Identification and Company Entry Description that Receivers see on their statements.

To read a CCD batch record by record, open the file in NACHA Navigator, a free sister site that parses NACHA files in your browser without uploading them.
