Free ABA routing number validator
Check a routing number, digit by digit.
Validate a US ABA routing transit number with the 3-7-1 checksum, see which bank it belongs to, compute the check digit from the first eight digits, and read what the prefix says about it.
- Runs in your browser
- Bank name from public data
- Same check over REST and MCP
Routing number

- A correct check digit proves only that the number is well formed, not that it is assigned to a bank or can receive payments. Bank names come from public FFIEC/FDIC data and banks’ own websites, not the Federal Reserve’s E-Payments Routing Directory (the authoritative list, which may not be redistributed).

How the 3-7-1 checksum works
Multiply the nine digits by 3, 7, 1, 3, 7, 1, 3, 7, 1 and add the products. A valid routing number’s total is a multiple of ten; the ninth digit is chosen to make it one.
| Digit | 0 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | ×3 | ×7 | ×1 | ×3 | ×7 | ×1 | ×3 | ×7 | ×1 |
| Product | 0 | 14 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 14 | 1 |
The products add up to 30; 30 mod 10 = 0. A multiple of ten, so the check digit is right.
What the first two digits mean
The first four digits are the Federal Reserve routing symbol; its first two say which kind of institution and which Federal Reserve district the number belongs to.

Where the bank names come from
Public data only, with its source and retrieval date on every answer. It names the bank behind most primary routing numbers, not every number in use.
- FFIEC Call Reports and FDIC BankFind. Every bank and savings institution that files a Call Report gives its primary routing number; the FFIEC’s public bulk data has them for each year since 2001. FDIC BankFind adds the legal name, headquarters, whether the bank is still open, and the successor of one that closed.
- Banks’ own websites. The routing numbers large banks publish (by state, for ACH, for wires), each linked to the page that lists it.
- Not included: credit unions, U.S. branches of foreign banks, and most banks’ secondary numbers (other state or ACH numbers, numbers of banks they acquired) unless the bank publishes them. A number missing here can still be valid.
- The authoritative list is the Federal Reserve’s E-Payments Routing Directory. Its terms don’t allow its data to be copied or redistributed, so this site doesn’t use it: search it there.
What a valid number proves — and what it doesn’t
- A passing checksum and an assigned prefix mean the number is well formed. They catch typos and transposed digits, not numbers that were never issued or have been retired.
- A bank name here is informational. Confirm the routing number with the receiving bank or the Federal Reserve’s directory before sending funds.
- Banks often publish different routing numbers for ACH and for wire transfers. Use the one your counterparty gave you for the payment type you are sending.
- The check runs in your browser. To name the bank, the page downloads this site’s public list for the number’s first four digits (its Federal Reserve routing symbol, which many banks share); the full number never leaves this page.
