How the amount is written
Whole dollars are written three digits at a time with their scale (thousand, million, billion, trillion); cents are written as a fraction of 100.
| Digits | Written as |
|---|---|
| 1 | one thousand |
| 234 | two hundred thirty-four |
| .56 | and 56/100 |
Together: One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars
US check conventions this follows
- Cents are a fraction: 56/100, and 00/100 for whole dollars.
- “And” appears once, between the dollars and the cents — never inside the dollar words: one hundred fifteen, not one hundred and fifteen.
- Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine are hyphenated; the first word is capitalized.
- The amount is never rounded: more than two decimals is an error, not a guess.
- When the words and the figure disagree, banks generally treat the words as controlling (UCC § 3-114) — another reason to cross-check them before a check goes out.
